The new year and design...

So this blog kind of got off to a running start and then I stopped short. Sorry bout that. :)

What have I been up to lately... well, honestly I'm STILL trying to finish those prom dresses. My problem is that I get side-tracked by other ideas and want to start on those as well, so now I have two dresses done, three of them almost finished, a bag I made for a commission, a vest in the making and millions of ideas in my head!

I'm also working on re-doing my portfolio... it seems like people are put off by my portfolio from FIDM's Debut... I can't imagine why... I mean... I only decorated it with skulls and tombstones and made all of the illustrations look like zombies...

hmm...

Anyhoo... This is the dress I started working on when I decided I needed to finish everything I've started before I start anything new haha...

I loooooove it... its all black faux leather and this crazy purple/black faux snake-skin...= hawt. :)

I also just found out that although FIDM had been telling us this entire time that our clothes from Debut were going to be shown at a California Rep Luncheon in Washington DC during the inagural week, they only actually showed 4 students work and our hideous "Chairing Styles" dresses which we had to make to match a chair out of upholstery fabric... woo, fun.

That was kind of lame, but at any rate, with the inaguration being over and done with as of today, we will be getting our clothes back from FIDM soon, so I'm planning to have a shoot and then possibly auction off some of the clothing at some point. :)

If you'd like to see photos of the luncheon, they are here:

The 8th photo down on the far left in the thumbnails is the plaid Charing styles two-piece outfit I designed.

What exactly do you DO?

A lot of times I have people ask me what type of fashion I create.
Most of the time the easiest answer that people will understand is "alternative fashion"... for the the few that realize that's a very broad answer, the best way to describe it is "Higher End Hot Topic" because its true. I had never thought of it that way until one of my instructors at FIDM brought it to my attention. He was prepping me for an interview and mentioned "you're taking Hot Topic and bringing it to the Designer Level" So that's really what I've decided to call it.
I have always said that my art is directly music related so why not think of myself as the higher end of a company who's slogan is "ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC"?

Then there's the people who ask the burning question... "well, who do you design for?" Meaning a client, of which I don't really have any... yet...

My DREAM would be to do freelance fashion design or styling for real Rockstars... Have all those alternative rockers everyone watches on the red carpet of the Grammy's because you think they are going to get rowdy and spill their beer... But then realize they are actual very cool and chilled out, but their faces will light up when they say ... "Oh, who am I wearing? NYTR by TessCherie... of course"

So here we go. Who do I want to dress? Take a look:

Shirley Manson. Oh goodness... I swear if i was into chicks I would be ALL over that girl... She's been one of my major inspirations/Heroes since I was about 14 years old. I just love her attitude, her style, and of course, her music... I would KILL for her to wear my clothes.

Jared Leto.
He looks so much better in those dark colors and eyeliner than he ever did in whatever else he used to wear doesn't he? Seriously, I don't even remember what else he used to do because 30 Seconds to Mars just blew everything else out of the water. He, with his little alter-attitude thing he has going on, is like, the epitome of what kind of dude I want to dress. Love the look (except the Crocs have GOT to go!), but I can make it even better ;)

Green Day.
Now here's some fellows who ALWAYS look sharp, don't they? This one is quite the stretch, since I think they already look SO good. Well, if they didn't already have such a great stylist (which I'd bet is probably Billy Joe's amazing wife ((head of their Adeline clothing label)) ), I would be all over that in a heartbeat... maybe Mrs. Billy Joe would just like to add another label to the closet??

Amy Lee of Evanescense.
Now this one was someone I hadn't already thought of. It was brought to my attention this afternoon. My boyfriend, Alan, sent me this photo saying that the looks I'm working on currently reminded him very much of Amy Lee's style. I know she does a lot of her own designing, but surely she's a busy girl, and she could use a hand to take some of that pressure off her shoulders. I spent a lot of time tonight looking at her photos, videos, etc... and I must say, I was incredibly inspired by even what she wears just on a day-to-day. She always looks great and I would love to design for her as well.

What do you think guys? Think my client wishlist can someday become a reality?

First Real Commission...

So I was commissioned by my Dad to make 6 travel bags for his company's external hard drives. The designers in his art department have started saving all of their work at the end of the day to an external and taking it home at night just in case (God Forbid...) anything happens to the office ever, they will still have their work.

I am making a short visit to Michigan for the holidays from the 23rd to the 27th so all 6 have to be completed by then. I'm planning to buy some nylon strapping from JoAnns for the straps so they are a little more sturdy, but i have most of the shells and linings ready to go...

He wanted them in all different fabrics and to look "a little funky" so each one has 3 different fabrics that make up the bag and each one has a different cool printed cotton on the front. I used 3 different skull patterns that I have (i have recently become obsessed with collecting skull printed cottons from JoAnns... ), a King Kong fighting Godzilla print, Sushi, and a Cheshire cat smile print.

They are gonna look pretty sweet... but using all these fun prints has just given me more ideas for the rest of the yardage I own... ugh... if only I had more time! I have to go back to my retail job tomorrow... my two days off are over... anyone else ever notice how when you want time to fly it doesn't, but when you want to have more time your days fly by?

Prom Dresses Galore!

So I recently decided to work on some Prom Dresses because I know that girls usually start looking for them in January/February, plus, it would be a great opportunity for me to do some ACTUAL designing rather than the teeshirt reconstructions I've recently been posting in my etsy store. I decided to make quite a few and once I started with one I got a TON more ideas and now i have 4 in the works after just a few weeks. I also started talking to a photographer on Model Mayhem who is actually the staff photographer for Hot Topic's online store. She's agreed to do some TFP work (which is time for photos, free for everyone, just to get some photos to add to your portfolio) So maybe now I will actually have some work to show when I say "I do freelance design." Although I don't have returning clients, I do have some clients and hopefully this will bring me some people who will want to come back.

So here's some progress:

This was the first one I started,

I'm calling it a "transformer dress" Its pictured here with a mini make-shift petticoat underneath (i still haven't made the actual one), which you can wear or not, and with a waist cincher which can also be with or without. It looks cute with just leggings or the full ensemble.

I added a double layer to the bust because its chiffon so it is see through, but you have extra coverage because of the layers at the bust, and the skirt is also multiple layers.
However, its kind of been my arch nemisis right now.... all the work that it has right now was done in one day. I stopped because I didn't have the right zipper, or the right buttons (I am adding button on suspenders to the waist cincher) but then once I got the right zipper the side zip for the dress looked to be a pain in the ass, so its been sitting unfinished...
These are the buttons I found at JoAnns...

I love them!
And the zipper I got off ebay is a two way separating zipper with the same tarnished silver:

its going to be great once it finally gets finished.. lol...

Design look slightly familiar? I altered the pattern from my Angel Finale dress from the Debut Show...

This black and white dress has only about HALF of the layers of chiffon as the original... (man, so much less of a pain in the ass!)
I also used the same fabrics from Debut... White Faux Leather for the base dress and black/white chiffon and black lace. Still needs to be lined and then it will be done :)

This is one of my favorites... (and the only one thats completely finished!) It has an irridescent taffeta and faux black leather, it has grommets in the back with fuschia lacing. The skirt is like a million layers of tulle! omg... its amazing... lilac, purple, blue, green... its a huge ball of fluff! I can't wait to do photos of this one!

this one also turned out pretty awesome. It was a few things I hadn't tried before.... although the photos are horrible, but you get the idea... I used the scraps from the chiffon I made the Transformer dress out of. I sewed them all together in long lines and gathered multiple layers of them to make this fabulously deconstructed skirt... and then I put it on the form and shredded away! It gave an amazing effect.

The corset is pretty simple, silver stretch satin and black faux leather, zip closure in the back. I added a chain the the front neckline with D-rings because I felt it needed a little something more. The zipper still needs to be put in the back of this one and then it shall be finished and ready to go ...

*phew*

Now i'm working on another project... something small... and then I have been commissioned to make 6 bags by the 23rd... time to get crackin!

First Post: Welcome to Progress Updates!

Well Hi there Ho there!

Greetings all. Sup?

I decided since everyone else has one, I would start a blogspot too. So here we go.

Of course, I already have a LiveJournal, but I use that for more personal posting, and the MySpace blog is sort of whatever and I've slightly neglected it because it seems like everyone else does as well... and if I ever post any fashion stuff in either one of those, there are very few people who see it... and even fewer that really care about it. Therefore, here we are. I shall be posting updates of what i'm working on day to day here, you will get to see progress shots, before and after pieces, etc.
For those of you who watch my YouTube this may be a little bit of extra heroin for you since you all know I don't have time to make videos as often as most of you would like. ;)

so here we go. I will be taking some shots later today and posting here so you can see what types of things have been keeping me from YouTube... I currently have 4 prom dresses anywhere from 50% to 80% complete... so look out for photos of that comin up.
here's a teaser: enjoy!
